A food bank is a non-profit organization that serves as a central distribution center for other non-profit organizations that provide food directly to individuals. Food is either donated to, or purchased by, the food bank. This food is then distributed to other non-profit organizations that serve individuals, such as soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters.
Community FoodBank of New Jersey is a member of America’s Second Harvest, the Nation’s Food Bank Network. Food banks across the United States belong to this network.
Where does the food come from?
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey works to provide support to over 1,600 agency programs that partner with us in the fight against hunger and poverty. These partners are nonprofit organizations that operate the following types of programs and services:
- Emergency food pantries
- Soup kitchens
- Shelters and on-site residential programs
- Senior feeding programs
- Child care centers
- Afterschool programs
- Group Homes
- Summer camps
In addition to food and grocery products our agencies have access to educational programs, technical assistance and materials, and funding support.
