A volunteer group from UMDNJ recently made its first visit to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and summed up their experience:
“It all began when a television story about homelessness and hunger aired right before the holiday season. New Jersey resident Henry Malpica, 13, was so affected by it that he asked his parents to donate the money they planned to spend on holiday gifts to feed the hungry.
Henry’s mother Beth Malpica, director of ophthalmic imaging at the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, came to work the next day and told her colleagues what Henry had said. His words inspired them to organize a day of volunteering at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, a non-profit organization helping to fight hunger and poverty. Twenty-one staff members and their families, some of whom are pictured below, delivered several cartons of donated food to the Community FoodBank and spent the day sorting and boxing donated items. They found the experience so fun and rewarding that they plan on volunteering again.”
