nutrition

Good nutrition is the foundation on which to build a life of good health. Parents have a unique opportunity to shape the lives of their children through exposing them to healthy, nutritious foods early in life. Offering whole grain products, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products instead of high fat, processed, or fast foods can decrease the risk of becoming overweight. This can also lower the risk of health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems later in life.

So what can you do to make sure your child is getting all the nutrients he or she needs to grow and stay healthy? The USDA has recently updated the Food Guide Pyramid in its efforts to improve the nutrition and well being of Americans. The new MyPyramid can serve as a guide for both children and adults in learning how to take the right steps to improve current diet habits for individuals. Take some time to explore MyPyramid.

thrift shop

The Thrift Shop at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey provides low cost access to a variety of everyday items and is often utilized by our partner agencies while they wait to pick up their food orders. In addition to selling items from housewares to clothing, the shop also sells meals for our Family Meals Program. Family meals are nutritionally balanced, serve a family of four, and cost just $5.  Individuals in an emergency situation are also able to shop for items at extremely low prices.
